Skawen Residential
Skawen Residential is a compact and modular solution developed for apartment buildings where low weight, limited installation space and minimal disruption are critical. It comes in two variants, chosen by the building’s heating system: without a heat pump for buildings with a geothermal heat pump, and with an integrated R290 heat pump for buildings on district heating.

Two Configurations, Chosen by the Building’s Heating System
Skawen Residential recovers the energy in the building’s warm extract air. What happens with that energy depends on how the building is heated — and that decides which variant is the right one.
Skawen Residential
For buildings with a geothermal heat pump
The building’s own geothermal heat pump already heats the building, so the Residential unit does not need a heat pump of its own and does not have to produce high-temperature water. Instead, it helps the geothermal heat pump work more efficiently.
- Recovers heat from the extract air and delivers water at 8–12 °C to the basement
- Raises the temperature of the water from the geothermal source (typically 0–3 °C) to about 5–6 °C, so the heat pump works more efficiently
- In summer, the recovered heat is stored in the geothermal source and used again in winter
- Models: SR 2.2, SR 3.2, SR 4.3

For buildings on district heating
A heating system fed by district heating needs water at 65 °C — otherwise it will not work. That is why this variant includes Skawen’s own rooftop heat pump, which raises the recovered energy to that temperature.
- Integrated heat pump with the natural refrigerant R290, installed on the roof
- Supplies the heating system with water at 65 °C
- Exhaust-air heat recovery covers 60–80% of the annual heating demand
- District heating tops up only in extreme winter conditions
- Models: SR HP2.2, SR HP3.2, SR HP4.3

Recover Energy When the Building Needs It
Warm extract air contains energy that would otherwise leave the building through the ventilation system. Skawen Residential recovers this energy and, when the heat pump configuration is selected, the rooftop R290 heat pump raises it to a temperature suitable for the heating system — hover the markers on the diagram for the individual components.
What makes the product different?
Skawen Residential is designed for practical use in real buildings – especially where low weight is required, space is limited, disruptions must be minimal, and long-term reliability is essential. Residential is built to be easy to install, safe, and scalable across similar housing types.
Composite casing – Exceptionally lightweight, between 120kg to 275kg, C5 corrosion-resistant, noise-absorbing, and fireproof for high durability without excessive weight. Modular design – Delivered in compact modules that can be quickly assembled on-site like LEGO bricks; perfect for tight or awkward (e.g. handling on roof) locations. Compact weight and rooftop profile – Discreet low weight design, can be installed directly on top of roof without reinforcements, barely visible from street level. Proprietary R290-based rooftop heat pump – Integrated with Residential heat recovery unit. High temperature output. Safe installation in open air. Simple piping and low installation cost compared to indoor alternatives.
Bypass recovery function – smart automation switches from heat recovery to passive mode when extra heat isn’t needed, avoiding overheating and saving energy. Bypass fire/smoke extraction function by-pass is used in case of fire to extract air from the building or to evacuate the smoke after the fire. Selectable in controls, depending on the local normative. Built for harsh conditions – Residential is designed to operate reliably in Scandinavian weather extremes – from freezing temperatures and high humidity to year-round heavy loads. Skawen Controller & IoT solution – 24/7 control and management of all functions of the solution. 20-year expected lifetime – Long-term performance with low maintenance cost. Proprietary Accumulator tank solution – Nimble and easy to install accumulator tanks for hot water and heating system. Remote software and control to flexibly manage integration with existing heating systems.

Recover ventilation energy and return it to the Building
Warm extract air contains energy that would otherwise leave the building through the ventilation system.
Skawen Residential recovers this energy and makes it available for reuse within the building. When the heat pump configuration is selected, the rooftop R290 heat pump raises the recovered energy to a temperature suitable for the designed heating system.
Depending on the configuration, the system can include:
• Extract-air heat recovery
• Rooftop R290 heat pump
• Connection to the building’s heating circuit
• Energy accumulation for heating and domestic hot water
• Integration with an existing heat pump or other energy source
• Automatic heat recovery bypass when additional heat is not required
• Coordinated operation through the Skawen controller
Developed for rooftops, restricted access and existing structures
Adding new equipment to an existing apartment building can be difficult. Roof load, access routes, available space and the amount of construction work may all limit the possible solution.
Skawen Residential uses a lightweight composite casing and modular construction to simplify transportation, rooftop handling and on-site assembly.
Installation advantages:
• Lightweight composite construction
• C5 corrosion resistance
• Compact rooftop profile
• Delivery in pre-assembled modules
• On-site assembly in restricted locations
• Reduced thermal bridging
• Suitable for demanding Nordic outdoor conditions
• Minimal changes to the existing building compared with conventional heavy equipment
Low equipment weight can reduce structural requirements and simplify installation. Final roof suitability and structural requirements must always be confirmed for the individual building.
Is Skawen Residential
suitable for your building?
suitable for your building?
Skawen Residential is primarily developed for existing apartment buildings where ventilation energy is currently being lost and conventional renovation solutions are difficult to install.
The solution is particularly relevant for:
• Apartment buildings constructed without modern heat recovery
• Housing associations seeking to reduce building energy consumption
• Properties with limited rooftop or technical-room space
• Renovations requiring minimal disruption to residents
• Buildings considering heat-pump or heating-system modernisation
• Projects that will be completed in several renovation stages
To evaluate a suitable Residential configuration, Skawen may require:
• Building and roof drawings
• Existing ventilation plans and extract-air volumes
• Current heating and domestic hot water system
• Annual energy consumption data
• Supply and return temperatures
• Available rooftop and technical space
• Structural and access information
• Planned renovation scope
• Project objectives and schedule

One control system for recovery, heating and accumulation
The Skawen controller coordinates the selected system functions and provides visibility into equipment operation.
When the connected control solution is included, building operators and technical teams can monitor system status remotely and respond to operating changes or alarms.
Depending on the selected configuration, control functions may include:
• Heat recovery control
• Heat pump operation
• Accumulator tank management
• Heating-system integration
• Automatic bypass operation
• Temperature and operating-status monitoring
• Alarm visibility
• Remote access and system management
• Integration with the building’s existing technical systems
The control strategy is configured according to the selected Residential system, existing energy sources and the operating requirements of the property.
