Recover the Heat That
Goes Down the Drain

Energy from wastewater

Warm greywater from showers, pools and other water-intensive operations carries a large amount of energy that is normally lost to the sewer. The SKW Water series recovers this heat and returns it to the building’s energy system.

The first installation — a prototype for the Reval Sport swim club in Tallinn, Estonia — combines energy recovery ventilation with a 1 MW greywater heat recovery system reaching a system COP of 16.5.

Typical applications are swimming pools and aquatic centres, sports and wellness facilities, and other buildings with a steady flow of warm wastewater.

  • Automated cleaning
The water is cleaned automatically as part of the recovery process.
  • Continuous monitoring
Water processing and system operation are monitored at all times.
  • Energy tracking in kWh
Follow the recovered energy in the Skawen monitoring app.
  • Works with ventilation heat recovery
Combined with energy recovery ventilation in the same project.

How SKW Greywater Recovers the Heat

Inside the unit

Warm greywater passes a staged heat exchanger, and a water-to-water heat pump raises the recovered heat to a temperature the building can use. Hover the markers on the diagram for the individual components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions

Greywater is the warm wastewater from showers, pools, washing and similar uses. A greywater heat recovery system takes the heat out of this water before it leaves the building and returns it to the building’s energy system.

The first system is a prototype for the Reval Sport swim club in Tallinn, Estonia: a 1 MW greywater heat recovery system with a system COP of 16.5, combined with energy recovery ventilation.

Energy use and recovery are shown in kWh in the Skawen monitoring app.

Each system is designed for the project. Share the water flows, temperatures and operating hours of your building, and Skawen will evaluate the recovery potential.
